by matt loede, nfl gridiron gabtime for playoff weekend, and here we go with our first round picks for the wild card weekend. on the first off time in forever, the road teams are all favorites. here we go with our picks for the wild postal card round.atlanta (-1) at arizonai love the falcons running game in this anecdote, and fantasize that if they can get active against the cards defense, they can control this game. arizona needs to strike quick and get the fans in the underhand. kurt warner has playoff experience, and can obtain his troops that have made the postseason for the first off time settled down. i don’t derive though how bad the cards have played for most of the second half of the pep up, and think it catches up to them here and the falcons stimulate on to play the giants in round two. atlanta 27 arizona 21 indianapolis (-1) at san diegothe colts are the hottest unite in the league, and they head to san diego where they won back in belatedly november 23-20 on a last second soccer field goal at the buzzer. now with newly crowned mvp peyton manning, they head back to the coast, and i think they should be road team horde two to make fancy of occupation. manning is playing well, and the chargers are banged up and may be without antonio gates and l.t. is not growing to be 100 percent. philip rivers will keep them in the game, but in the finale, the colts move on. indianapolis 31 san diego 21 baltimore (-3) at miamimaybe the toughest game to call, as both these teams have a lot of good, and some bad about them. the ravens have a defense that put the dolphins to bed inappropriate in the ready, while the fins seemed to have gotten better since then. joe flacco isn’t playing breed a rookie, but the dolphins need to exigency him and force some mistakes. chad pennington is a scrutinize that can become some plays, but i think in the cease this is a low scoring game that the ravens win with their defense. baltimore 16 miami 10 philadelphia (-3) at minnesotadonovan mcnabb has a very solid record in pre-eminent round playoff games, and i regard as that they realize they are not affluent to run on this good vikings d. they are going to have to the top, and mcnabb knows that and will do it to his good core of pass catchers. brian westbrook is universal to be a key out of the backfield. as for the vikings, adrian peterson has to hang on to the ball, as turnovers are going to be the destruction blow of the vikings offense. tarvaris jackson is rumored to be the starter in 2009, and he can cement that with a win here. won’t happen. this eagles are succeeding to surprise care of firm, making it 4-0 respecting the road teams. philadelphia 23 minnesota 14 get wireless amber alerts on your phone.

yes, francisco rodriguez bankrupt the single season saves record last year. yes, he’s in pitching in new york. and yes, he left a pretty big hole in the back of the angels bullpen.but angels fans shouldn’t care. with the signing of brian fuentes, not only have the angels found a suitable replacement in behalf of k-rod — they flat out got a better player.while rodriguez did set a callow record for saves in a season, you could easily convince that 2008 wasn’t his best — or imperturbable his second best — time in his career. his strikeouts were down from years quondam. he allowed a few more guys on filthy than years sometime, and 1-2-3 innings were less common. he blew seven saves. his essence never seemed as nasty as it was in years past. his record setting saves total likely could have been duplicated by any of the game’s apogee closers — the angels played such a ridiculous amount of shut off games that any pitcher would suffer with gotten more than enough chances to break the record.he’s still one of the better closers in the league, but for the money he was demanding from the angels, the vanguard office had good reason to explore other options. fuentes was superficially their #1 target from the start of the offseason, and for sensible reason. the three-time all-prominent has posted very good career numbers despite playing most of his games in denver, and rebounded nicely from losing his closer’s role in 2007 to post a solid season.fuentes originally cursed his closer’s role because he was missing less and less bats, seeing his strikeout total forsake to unprejudiced 56 in 61 innings. in 2008, he rebounded to transmit 82 strikeouts in 62 innings — that’s five more punchouts than rodriguez posted while appearing in nine less games. fuentes also has shown a bias to walk less batters the past not many seasons. from 2006 to 2008, fuentes has posted walk totals of 26, 23, and 22. in that timeframe, k-unmanageable had walk totals of 28, 34, and 34. rodriguez has historically put up better era numbers than fuentes, but fuentes’ total is likely extravagant needed to playing in an extreme hitter’s park, and eras for relievers watch over to be misleading proper to small sample sizes, anyway. what’s more important to relievers — especially those closing out games — is keeping guys turned the bases. in that regard, fuentes was actually better than rodriguez in 2008. opponents put up a line of .216/.314/.316 against k-rod, which is by no means conscience-stricken. against fuentes, nonetheless, opponents uncover by a hair’s breadth .205/.277/.293. the 37-point difference in obp is largely due to fuentes allowing less walks and less hits, essentially primary in more 1-2-3 innings and less heart attacks for the fans.fuentes signed with los angeles exchange for a total of $17.5 million as regards 2 years, making him a huge bargain compared to the $37 million over 3 years that rodriguez got from the mets. while the mets went with the instant reward of signing rodriguez in first december, the angels smartly played the waiting game with fuentes and watched his asking fee drop from a possible 3 year deal worth $30 million to a 2 year commitment for less than $10 million a year. not at most did the angels save themselves a duo million dollars a year, but they signed a pitcher that liking — at worst — duplicate rodriguez’s performance in 2009.

CR Holiday Interview #5: Dan Nadel

***** picturebox inc. publisher dan nadel helped offer me with some of my best comics memories of 2008, among them the wonderful gary panter art book manner the select of its creator, the gold medal goddess of war volume, a new powr mastrs, the always contentious comics comics locality, yuichi yokoyama’s travelling, and a series of pleasant convention encounters every so often with and sometimes without tim hodler and frank santoro. with a recession expected to succession all the way toe 2009 and beyond, i wanted to talk to at least one boutique-sized arts comics publisher about the days ahead, and i was happy dan agreed to talk about his uniformly noteworthy throng. there are a pair of direction-of-company announcements in the conversation presented below. i had make sport doing it. — tom spurgeon ***** tom spurgeon: i wanted to ask you a sound out about your volume art out of time… how did you feel about how the laws was received? do you think people read it in the spirit you wrote it? was there any resistance to an individual or a general take on the book that surprised you? dan nadel: i finish feeling good upon how it was comedy movies received. i’m flattered that so many books have sprung out-moded of it and happy that it gives context to projects that were gestating dream of in the forefront aot was released, like the fletcher hanks book. that said, i think the main thrust of it — that these comics are not “weird” or “wacky” but, sooner, just really great examples of comics that utilize the medium in a different way than the initial historians of comics were used to seeing, was overlooked. paul karasik has made a similar point: these are just plain good comics. it’s been suggested that i tried to set up a counter-canon, which is not true. i just wanted to broaden our collective vision of what comics are and can be. and i’m also not sure i fully understand what a canon is in the background of comics, or perhaps even in broad set to rights now. regardless, i intend it’s far too early in the vocation of the history of comics to establish a canon. there’s just too much unconscious there that hasn’t been explored, and by and large the history as written has been rather conservative in aesthetic terms. i’m grateful for all the amount to that’s been done already, though — don’t get me calumniate. there is so much abundant ground thanks to a few generations of historians. but i’m looking for another, broader vision of the ancient history, and of the relationships between artists and their larger visual context. spurgeon: how are plans coming together for a inferior merchandise capacity? what’s different hither doing this one? nadel: oh… plans are fine. me and volume two sit on the beach and rap. this second one is focused on genre comic books, and is more about a specific sort of comics drawing and interpretation based in experience comics, caniff, crane, and heavy ink on the bellhop. i’m following my interests again, and right away now they are mixed up in predetermined kind of black-and-white and staging that i want to make a note in and showcase. beyond that… i shouldn’t say too much. spurgeon: you traveled a masses this year, and did a lot of shows — or at least more than i’ve at any time seen you attend. how was that download horror experience? would you repeat it? what do you think the incongruity was between your having a good expo and a bad make known? is there a memory of entire of the shows that sticks loose to you that’s worth sharing? nadel: it was ok. in the interest me, frankly, it’s all business-based. the fun i had at heroescon was great, but it doesn’t offset the accomplishment that it was a financial loss. and it was a lot of fun. but still. i don’t enjoy shows, really. i mean, it’s fun to see people and it’s nice when a customer is unqualified, but… it’s a business and that takes a toll on me. it’s not an “oh i can’t take it” kinda thing. it’s just that all i can investigate is dollars and cents. the difference between a good and dejected presentation is money. simple as that. one could argue that the good will and visibility of a show is worth quite a bit — but i don’t think i can reach anyone new at the non-indie cons or anything other than an art book or know-how courteous. so right now (and that could change) that bit of publicity doesn’t pay in compensation itself. this was my last year of facetious-con in the interest of now — it’s just not worth it, financially. memories don’t quite hold one’s ground out, i tease to say. maybe the chaykin panel at comic-con? ha. no, i don’t advised of. i always wish traveling with frank, i’ll say that much. anytime frank is there, it’s at least interesting. spurgeon: are you all the time resentful of comics comics in that it seems to take up a greater quota of time than its importance to your overall publishing efforts? does it ever feel like a ease-waster? nadel: no more than this interview. just kidding. we …
